Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72 years old from Long Beach CA. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theater. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced it to DuVernay. DuVernay learned the art of being a good instrument for activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially aware by her mother. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make a documentary about the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was awarded her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. In the year 1990 she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury and look through their trash. Following her disappointment with journalism by the tasks she was assigned she decided to pursue the field of publicity. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist at small production studios right after she graduated from school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was created in 1999. The agency was the first to launch a variety of lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
